Meritorious Unit Commendation

Precedence: 23

Description & Criteria

The Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) is a decoration awarded to units of the Navy and Marine Corps that have distinguished themselves by valorous or meritorious achievements that render the unit outstanding compared to other similar units. The award was authorized by SECNAV Notice 1650 on July 17, 1967, and is effective for actions occurring on or after that date. ### Criteria for Award The MUC can be awarded to any ship, Marine Regiment, Naval Construction Battalion, Navy Air Wing, Marine Air Group, or other unit of the Navy or Marine Corps. The achievement must be of a character that would merit an individual award of the Bronze Star Medal (BSM) in a combat situation or the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) in a non-combat situation. Notably, normal performance of duty, participation in many combat missions, or large-scale actions does not, in itself, justify this award. Care must be taken to ensure that awards are not given for the actions of individual components within a larger unit【4:1†source】【4:2†source】. ### Award Elements The MUC consists of a full-sized medal and ribbon. However, no citation or certificate is issued with the award, which distinguishes it from many other military decorations【4:2†source】【4:4†source】. Subsequent awards are denoted by wearing a 3/16-inch bronze star on the ribbon, with a 3/16-inch silver star to be worn in place of five bronze stars【4:1†source】【4:2†source】. ### Notable Recipients Units may be recognized for participation in significant operations. While specific notable recipients are not detailed within the manual, the award is often bestowed for exceptional performance during major military operations. For example, engagements during the Global War on Terrorism have seen MUCs awarded to various naval and marine units【4:5†source】. ### Issuing Authority The Commanding Officers (COs) of units that have authority to award the Navy Achievement Medal can also recommend the MUC for their command if the eligibility criteria are met. The final decision rests with the Secretary of the Navy. ### Eligibility To be eligible for the MUC, personnel must be permanently assigned to a unit during the meritorious service period, or attached for at least 30 days, among other stipulations【4:3†source】【4:10†source】. ### Historical Context The establishment of the MUC was part of a broader effort to recognize the achievements of units collectively, rather than solely focusing on individual service members. This recognition serves to inspire camaraderie and honor teamwork within military units【4:17†source】. This award acknowledges the collective efforts of military units and aims to promote high standards of performance across various service branches.
