Description & Criteria

The National Defense Service Medal (NDSM) is an honor awarded to members of the United States military who have demonstrated honorable active service during specific periods of national conflict. ### History and Authorization The NDSM was established by Executive Order 10448, signed by President Harry S. Truman on 22 April 1952. It was later amended by Executive Order 13293. The award recognizes service during designated periods of national emergency or conflict, highlighting the importance of maintaining military readiness during times of global tension. ### Effective Dates The NDSM has several qualifying periods during which members must have served honorably on active duty to be eligible for the medal: 1. 27 June 1950 to 27 July 1954 (Korean War) 2. 1 January 1961 to 14 August 1974 (Vietnam Conflict) 3. 2 August 1990 to 30 November 1995 (Gulf War) 4. 11 September 2001 to a date to be determined (Global War on Terrorism)【4:19†source】. ### Criteria and Eligibility To qualify for the NDSM, service members must meet the following criteria: - Must have served on active duty during one of the specified periods. - Both active duty personnel and members of the National Guard and Reserve are generally eligible, especially those who were part of the Selected Reserve in good standing during the periods from 2 August 1990 to 30 November 1995, and from 11 September 2001 onward【4:19†source】【4:12†source】.
