Navy Unit Commendation

Precedence: 22

Description & Criteria

The Navy Unit Commendation (NUC) is a military award established by ALNAV 224 on December 18, 1944. It is awarded to any ship, aircraft, detachment, or unit of the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps that has distinguished itself through outstanding heroism in action against an enemy or through extremely meritorious service that does not involve combat but supports military operations. This award recognizes units for performance that is notably superior when compared to similar entities in equivalent circumstances. To justify the NUC, the unit must have acted as a cohesive team in a way that would merit the award to an individual of the Silver Star for heroism or the Legion of Merit for meritorious achievement. It is important to note that the routine performance of duty under normal wartime hazards doesn't qualify for the award. Care must be taken to ensure that the commendation is not awarded for standard duties or for actions of a few individuals within a larger unit【4:0†source】. Subsequent awards of the NUC are denoted by wearing a 3/16-inch bronze star on the ribbon, while five bronze stars are represented by a 3/16-inch silver star【4:0†source】. In terms of history, the NUC was created to provide formal recognition of collective achievements that may not rise to the level of the Presidential Unit Citation, yet still demonstrate exceptional service or valor. Notable recipients of this commendation include numerous naval vessels and units that participated in significant operations, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and dedication【4:0†source】【4:3†source】. Overall, the NUC serves as a testament to the collective efforts of military units and their capability to perform at an outstanding level under pressure, whether in combat or in support roles.
